This year's Jeans 4 Justice event is a powerful two-part experience designed to raise awareness of sexual assault and to raise funds for Crisis Services of North Alabama.

We're inviting survivors and allies to participate in either our Jeans 4 Justice Exhibit at Straight to Ale or to donate an item in our online silent auction--both focused on the themes of sexual assault awareness and healing.

The Exhibit

Jeans 4 Justice has always been about raising awareness through artfully embellished denim. Jeans can be altered to express your experience or messages you want to send to survivors or our community. Exhibit artists can choose to offer their items for sale with proceeds going to Crisis Services.

The Auction

We're also hosting an online silent auction where artists can donate unique artworks, crafts, clothing, or other items created from denim or that relate to sexual assault (see themes below). Whether it’s a worry doll made from denim or a custom pet portrait (because our furry friends help us through a lot of challenging times), your contribution will help fund our programs.

Every 68 seconds, an American is sexually assaulted.

Every 9 minutes, that victim is a child.

Only 25 out of every 1,000 perpetrators will end up in prison.

1 in 5 women have been sexually assaulted. For men that number is 1 in 71.

In 1999, an Italian court overturned a rape conviction, claiming the victim would have assisted her rapist in removing her jeans because they were so tight, therefore implying consent. In response, women flooded the streets wearing denim, sparking a global movement.

Some themes to spark ideas:

  • Consent: emphasize clear communication and mutual respect in relationships.

  • Healthy relationships: showcase positive connections, green flags, and how to identify unhealthy patterns.

  • Survivorship: incorporate messages of resilience, empowerment, and the journey of healing.

  • Support and Ally-ship: design pieces that stand with loved ones who have experienced sexual assault.

  • Strong emotions: Capture the range of feelings associated with sexual assault, fostering empathy and understanding.

  • Victim-blaming: Incorporate messages that counter myths and challenge victim-blaming.

  • Underrepresented survivors: Women aren’t the only victims of sexual assault. Men, children, elders, and members of the LGBTQ+ community also experience sexual violence.
