2024 Training Dates

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has received advanced training and education in the forensic field of sexual assault.  The SANE completes a medico-legal examination, which includes the  collection of forensic evidence from the patient. The SANE is also an expert witness and may have to testify in court to the findings of the medico-legal examination. Course Requirements: You must be an RN with at least two years experience, you must attend the entire training, sign in each day and complete evaluations, & after the training, each attendee will be required to complete clinical experiences in his or her own community.

Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner Training

Dates: July 9, 10, 11, 16, 17, 18, 23, 24, 25

Clinical Skills Lab: August 17 & 18 8:00-5:30

Times: Registration - July 9 @ 7:30, July 10-11, 16-18, 23-25 8:00-5:00

Location: Huntsville, Alabama. Location will be provided after registration

Cost:

$350 for Didactic Training (Combined Adult/Adolescent/Pediatric/DV/CPA/EA Course)
$489 for 16-hour Clinical Skills Lab following Didactic Training
$589 for BOTH the Didactic and Clinical Skills Lab Training

72 CE hours will be awarded upon completion of the combo training & 16 CE hours for the clinical skills lab

Crisis Services of North Alabama provides Alabama’s only nationally approved Adult/Adolescent/Pediatric Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner trainings through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).

Crisis Services of North Alabama is a Board-approved provider of continuing nursing education in Alabama by the Alabama Board of Nursing. Our approval status is valid through March 5, 2024. Our provider number is nontransferable and utilized exclusively by Crisis Services of North Alabama.

CSNA provides Alabama’s only nationally approved Adult/Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner trainings through the International Association of Forensic Nurses (IAFN).

A Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE) is a registered nurse who has received advanced training and education in the forensic field of sexual assault. The SANE works as part of the Sexual Assault Response Team (SART) - the multidisciplinary team includes law enforcement, advocates, attorneys and the Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner.

Cancellation Policy

The full registration fee is due upon registration. Written cancellations received at least 30 days prior to the beginning of the training can be refunded less a $100 administrative fee. Registration is transferable to another qualified applicant within the same organization. No refunds will be given if cancellation is received within 30 days of the training session or if the registrant is a ‘no show’ and fails to show up for the training. In the event CSNA cancels the training for any reason, 100% of the registration fee will be refunded.

SANE-A and SANE-P Combined Training- Didactic Only

You must attend all 8 days of the course. This course provides 64 didactic contact hours, and an opportunity to work in the field of forensic nursing. 

After the 64-hour didactic course, you must complete the 16-hour clinical skills training before you can begin working with Crisis Services of North Alabama. A combined registration is offered for a reduced price.

SANE-A and SANE-P Didactic Training & Clinical Skills Lab Combo

Adult/Adolescent and Pediatric

 

Students who commit to both the SANE Didactic Training ($350) and the  Clinical Skills Lab Training ($489) the combination fee will be $589, which includes 96 hours of CEs.

You must attend all 8 days of the course. This course provides 64 didactic contact hours, and an opportunity to work in the field of forensic nursing. 

After the 64-hour didactic course, you must complete the 16-hour clinical skills training before you can begin working with Crisis Services of North Alabama. A combined registration is offered for a reduced price.

SANE-Adult/Adolescent Training and Clinical Skills Lab Combo

This course can be offered to individuals or to organizational groups. This course offers 40 didactic contact hours. All 5 days must be attended by participants for contact hours to be awarded.

The clinical skills lab will offer an additional 16 contact hours.

Clinical Skills Lab

 

Our IAFN Approved Clinical Skills Lab is a two-day forensic nursing skills lab for RNs and APRNs who have completed a 40 or 64-hour didactic Adult/Adolescent or Combined SANE course. Students will be given the opportunity to apply the learned classroom information and skills in a realistic setting through the use of gynecological and forensic teaching associates. Participants will observe and demonstrate the following: specimen collection and packaging, photo documentation of findings, and genital & pelvic inspection. This is the skills lab only and does not include the classroom portion of the training.

After the 64-hour didactic course, you must complete the 16-hour clinical skills training before you can begin working with Crisis Services of North Alabama. A combined registration is offered for a reduced price.

SANE-Pediatric Training

 

This course can be offered to an organization to train a group of nurses. This course offers 40 didactic contact hours. All 5 days must be attended by participants for contact hours to be awarded. This activity has been submitted to the IAFN for approval to award contact hours. The IAFN is accredited as a provider of continuing nursing education by the American Nurses Credentialing Center’s Commission on Accreditation.

Clinical Preceptorship

 

The Forensic Nurse Examiner Program at Crisis Services of North Alabama (CSNA) in Huntsville, Alabama has been providing forensic examinations for 28 years. They are a community-based program, providing adult and adolescent sexual assault, intimate partner and strangulation exams, elder abuse, child physical abuse, felony assault and suspect examinations to over 800 patients per year. The CSNA forensic nursing program offers clinical preceptorship instruction by experienced Forensic Nurse Preceptors, guided by IAFN educational recommendations. This experience is perfect for novice FNEs looking to gain experience or seasoned FNEs in need of updating skills.

Mock Trial

 

Are you a Forensic Nurse, Social Worker or Forensic Interviewer who has never testified?

If the answer is yes, this is the training for you. You will learn about the courtroom process. The training will teach you the skills need to provide expert or fact testimony to a Judge or Jury in a Mock Trial Setting.

Course Overview:

  • How to prepare for trial

  • Role of the Defense Attorney

  • Role of the Prosecutor

  • Role of the Victim Service Officer

  • Participation in a Mock Trial

Domestic Violence Training

 

Are you a Forensic Nurse who would like more training on Domestic Violence and exams?

You will learn about Domestic Violence and how to conduct an exam on a victim.

CEs will be provided.

Forensic Teaching Associate Training(FTA)-Free

The forensic teaching associate training is to provide male, female and transgender students the skills and knowledge so they can be utilized in CSNA’s forensic nurse examiner program. The training includes areas of study in forensic evidence collection; the trauma interview, forensic evidence collection, photography, body and genital assessment. You will become the patient so that the nurse can practice examinations prior to examining patients that have just been through an assault. Upon completion of the three day training you will be involved on our clinical skills labs and one to one instruction for novice FNEs looking to gain experience or seasoned FNEs in need of updating skills. The training is free to attendees.
