in 2000 the National Sexual Violence Resource Center and the Resource Sharing Project asked sexual violence organizations about their preferred color, symbol, and month to bring awareness to sexual violence. The organizations chose a teal ribbon as a symbol for sexual assault awareness, and SAAM began that year.
