This 40-hour Adult/adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE)/Forensic Nurse Examiner (FNE) training provides registered nurses with the foundational knowledge and skills needed to care for adult, adolescent, and pediatric patients who have experienced sexual assault and other forms of interpersonal violence. The course combines evidence-based education, trauma-informed care, forensic assessment, injury identification, documentation, evidence collection, and multidisciplinary collaboration to prepare nurses for the next steps in developing safe, compassionate, and competent forensic nursing practice.
The program also includes a 16-hour hands-on Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL), where participants apply the knowledge gained during the didactic course in a supervised, simulated learning environment. Working with Forensic Teaching Associates (FTAs) and experienced forensic nurse educators, participants develop and practice essential examination techniques, injury recognition, anogenital assessment, evidence collection, forensic photography, documentation, and patient-centered communication. The CSL bridges the gap between theory and practice, building confidence and competence before participants begin their clinical preceptorship experience.
