The 40-hour Pediatric and Adolescent Sexual Assault Nurse Examiner (SANE-P) Training provides registered nurses with the specialized knowledge and foundational skills required to deliver compassionate, trauma-informed, and developmentally appropriate care to infants, children, and adolescents who have experienced sexual abuse, sexual assault, or other forms of interpersonal violence.
This evidence-based course explores pediatric anatomy and physiology, child development, medical-forensic history taking, injury identification, forensic documentation, evidence collection, sexually transmitted infection and pregnancy considerations, mandatory reporting requirements, courtroom preparation, and multidisciplinary collaboration. Emphasis is placed on recognizing normal anogenital anatomy across developmental stages, distinguishing findings that may be associated with abuse from normal variants, communicating effectively with children and caregivers, and minimizing additional trauma throughout the examination process.
The program also includes a 16-hour hands-on Clinical Skills Laboratory (CSL), where participants apply their knowledge in a supervised, simulated learning environment. Working with experienced forensic nurse educators and Forensic Teaching Associates (FTAs), participants develop practical skills in pediatric and adolescent medical-forensic examinations, anogenital anatomy identification, injury recognition, evidence collection, forensic photography, documentation, and trauma-informed communication. The Clinical Skills Laboratory is designed to build confidence, enhance clinical decision-making, and prepare participants for supervised clinical preceptorship and independent forensic nursing practice.
